Pharmacist To Care For Athletes In Summer Olympics

CHRISTIE DAISS, PHARMD PLACED IN THE ATHLETE VILLAGE
When athletes from all over the world compete in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, MSU HealthTeam pharmacist, Christie Daiss, PharmD, will be one of 5,000 healthcare volunteers in attendance. Daiss will hold the position of a medical services team pharmacist working in the Polyclinic at the Olympic village where athletes and delegations are housed.
The Polyclinic within the Olympic Village has on average 600 visits per day during the Olympics.
When asked what sports she is most looking forward to seeing, she replies: "Definitely rowing is high on my list."
It's no surprise. Daiss received her undergraduate degree from the MSU Lyman Briggs College and was on the MSU Women's rowing team from 2002-2006. One could say Daiss is specially qualified to understand the pharmaceutical needs of competing athletes. Being a pharmacist and a former collegiate athlete, she is uniquely positioned to understand medication and supplement concerns for competing athletes.
At MSU, Daiss not only is a friendly face behind the pharmacy counter at the MSU Clinical Center location, she also is the liasion between MSU HealthTeam Pharmacy and the MSU Athletics Department. In this role, she works with the athletic training and healthcare team to make sure over-the-counter medications and prescriptions are available for teams when needed.
As for seeing Michael Phelps compete? "The best way to miss the Olympics is to volunteer," Daiss responded.
